Aerial image of Tataraimaka Pa / St George Redoubt Historic Reserve and the Waiaua Stream mouth.
In 1818, a pivotal moment unfolded in the Taranaki region when muskets made their first appearance. Tribes hailing from North Auckland and Waikato launched an assault on Tātaraimaka pa, the renowned stronghold of Taranaki Iwi matriarch Ueroa and her husband, Tamakaha.
The attack claimed numerous lives, and the pa was never again occupied. Today, the headland is protected as a reserve, serving as a poignant reminder of the indomitable spirit and enduring heritage of Taranaki Iwi.
